When Friday came we packed up the van and headed back to Michigan, but in the opposite direction. Instead of going back to Eric's parents' house we headed North to spend Memorial Day weekend with my parents.

Asher walked the 3.5 mile run/walk with Eric while I walked most of it with my mom. It was extremely hot and a long way for his little legs but he made it almost the entire way on his own (Daddy carried him for a short way near the end) and beat me!
When the race was over they announced the overall winners for boys and girls and then announced the winners of each age group for boys and girls. They started with the boys ages 0-5 and we were all excited to hear Asher's name called out! He won the gold for his age group! Actually he was the only person in his age group boy or girl, but that didn't matter to him. He won and got a real medal like all of the other winners. To say he was excited is an extreme understatement. :)
Avery (who didn't do the race and opted to ride with Papa in the Gator on security duty) was pretty jealous of Asher's medal so Asher let him wear it for a few minutes. Then, when they had finished announcing all of the winners, they announced that they were going to have a short race for the little kids. On this one everyone that finished got a small gold medal, so Avery was pretty thrilled...even though his medal wasn't quite as cool as big brother's.

After the race, we spent the remainder of the day chillin' out at Grandma and Papa's new pool and visiting with some relatives that came by to visit.

On Saturday afternoon while our family was visiting, we got a very sudden huge storm. The sky went completely black, the wind picked up and it started to pour...and then hail. When it was mostly over, Asher took advantage of the massive puddles outside...
The next day (Sunday) was much of the same. We enjoyed the church service and a fun picnic to follow at my parents' church and then headed back to their house for more lazy fun.

On Monday it was Memorial Day. We started off the day with a gator ride to Aunt Carol and Uncle Joe's house to pick up the float that Dad was going to pull for the Lion's Club in the parade.

| While we were at Aunt Carol's house Avery found an old pedal John Deere Tractor which is an exact copy of the one I had when I was a kid (which they had gifted to me for my birthday). I wish we could track down where mine ended up because Avery looked totally adorable driving it around! |
Later that morning we headed over to the Nadeau cemetery to pay our respects to the brave men and women that sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Since we usually spent Memorial Day on the lake at Eric's parents' house it was important for me to take them to the cemetery service while we were in the U.P. so they could begin to understand what the holiday is actually about.
The service was not very long but the boys were hot and antsy. At one point they tried to climb on top of a gravestone so we tried to explain to them what they were and why you treat them respectfully. Basically what the boys heard was that there were skeletons in the ground at those locations so they better not step on them. The look on Avery's face was priceless. He didn't start to cry or anything but his eyes got really big and he slowly began to back away from the grave site, decided it was best to sit in Daddy's lap. Now whenever we drive past a cemetery Avery yells out "keletens!"
When the service was over we said hello to some family (being sure to check out baby cousin Lucas) and then headed across the street to await the annual Memorial Day parade.
Now the Carney-Nadeau Memorial Day parade may not seem like a big deal to most, but if you ask anyone from the area you are sure to be told that it and the events to follow are the biggest things that happen in the tiny town...cause they are! Eric even happened to look at the traffic report on his phone since we would be traveling back home a little later and saw that the highway in Carney was red with traffic...for probably the only time to happen every year! That said, we all had fun watching the event drive by and being that we were at the very beginning of the parade the boys also had a blast running around and collecting the loads of candy, coozies, sunglasses, popsicles, beachballs and more that were tossed their way!

When the parade was over we visited with family a little bit more and then headed into Carney to enjoy a little of the festivities there before heading home.
Our first stop was at the town Legion to say Hi and Goodbye to Grandma who was working there for the Lion's Club. She also bought the boys some tickets to put in the raffle. They found a pool just like Grandma and Papa's that they both desperately wanted and Asher was sure that he would win. Spoiler Alert: He didn't.
After the Legion we headed over to the Town Hall where we had some brats for lunch and got to play with the C-N Robot's Club's creations.

Finally, it was almost time to head back home but before doing so we got the boys some ice cream to cool down and let them work out a little energy in the bouncy house before our long drive home.
The drive was quite uneventful with the boys sleeping most of the way. When we got home, the air was still very hot and Avery quickly stripped to his undies ready to jump in our pool (even if it wasn't as big as Grandma and Papa's)...
...and speaking of pools, Asher asked me to text Grandma and see if he won anything with his raffle tickets. He didn't. He was devastated and I knew then it was time to close the books on this week and rest up for a new week ahead.
