The 4th of July 2019

This year we stayed in Kenosha for the 4th of July and did our best to enjoy the festivities of the day while also finishing up our packing to begin our summer vacation the following morning.  Our first event of the day was the neighborhood bike parade.

Typically, we are not in town for most holidays, including Independence Day, which means we never really know what is going on in our area during that time.  This year we found out that apparently someone in our neighborhood has been hosting a bike parade/ice cream social every year for the past 15 years.  Since we figured the boys would have fun decorating their bikes and partaking in the fun, I dug out all of the red, white and blue that I could find and let them get to work. Then we headed a few blocks away to the start of the parade route.  Hazel and I held back and waited while the boys rode around the neighborhood together.  Then we all reconvened at the hosts' home and enjoyed some lemonade, ice cream and other treats while also getting to talk to some people from our slice of Kenosha.

Hanging out with our neighbors.

Nothing beats ice cream for breakfast!

When the parade and social were all over, we headed back home to work on some more packing.  Eric and the boys worked on things outside while Hazel "helped" me inside.

Asher also finished up the Charizard Mega Construx that he'd gotten a couple days before.

In the early afternoon, we braved the sweltering heat to enjoy a real parade in Somers.  There, we had a good time but with the HOT sun (which we were not used to due to the below-normal temperatures of the first half the summer) we didn't make it until the end.

Something about this picture reminds me a lot of my baby pictures.

The boys tried hard to get some candy, but with so many kids around it was tough.  The floats always threw the candy to a group of kids on the left or right of them but never to us, so they were usually not fast enough.  Avery especially had a rough time and was getting VERY frustrated.

After the parade we headed back home to bask in the air conditioning and finish up our packing.  Then that evening we headed downtown to enjoy one last event: fireworks.  Since it was threatening rain (& did end up raining for a while) we found a dry place to hang out and enjoyed some strawberry shortcake while we waited.

When it was finally time, we found a spot near the harbor to watch the colorful explosions.  The boys drove Eric and I a little crazy with their impatience and antsy-ness as we tried to enjoy the show and introduce Baby Girl to her first fireworks.  In the end, Eric ended up finding a quiet spot with Hazel away from the boys and I, only to be joined by them soon after.  In summary, next time maybe we'll just take Hazel.  ;P
