Baby Life Week 4: Tough Going

July 20, 2012: This week started off on a high note with another visit from the Migrins.  Eric's parents drove out on Saturday morning and arrived around 2:00 pm in the afternoon.  In the meantime, Auntie Julie & Uncle Dave flew into Chicago & then drove up to meet their nephew for the first time.  Thus we had all of the Migrins together (young & old) except Uncle Robbie...Asher can't wait to meet him! :)

Eric's Mom, Dave & Julie all worked together on Saturday night to make us a great meal, while Eric & I enjoyed some time without responsibility.
Eric's dad took on the tough job of watching Asher.

July 21, 2012: On Sunday morning, we skipped church because Eric's family had very limited time with us and enjoyed a quiet morning outside complete with donuts and lemon bars...breakfast of champions...and the game of pass the baby...

Eric's Mom & I also worked on the Cottage's kitchen design.

July 24, 2012: After the visit from the Migrins, the week was off to a good start.  Asher & I went back to our normal routine of eating, sleeping & diaper changing, and Eric went back to work.

July 25, 2012: On Wednesday, the week that started off very well took a drastic turn.  Thinking I was exhausted & hormonal, I had a good cry out of frustration and feeling crappy that morning.  Asher had been going through a phase for the past week or two that he would not sleep unless he was held.  Even if I held him until he was asleep for an hour and then laid him down, he would be screaming within five minutes.  Thus, we spent a lot of time sleeping on the couch together, and I got very little decent rest.  I thought this was the reason that I felt so awful on this morning, and spent the day on the couch trying to rest.  I put Asher in his chair for a bit, but he was not convinced that was better than Mommy's arms.

As the day wore on, I became convinced that I had a UTI and called the doctor.  I spoke with a nurse who was convinced of the same and ordered a prescription for me.  I forgot to ask if those drugs were okay to take while nursing though, so that evening I called the clinic again and spoke with the doctor on call.  By that point I was also running a fever of 101.5 and was having back pain.  When I told the doctor this, he was concerned that it may be a kidney infection and asked me to head into the ER.  So, at 8:00 in the evening, Eric & I packed up Asher and some bottles and headed to the hospital.  We spent 3-1/2 hours there while I found out that it was just a UTI, was given an IV and some drugs.  We were exhausted, but happy that things were not worse. The ER doctor even seemed like he thought it was dumb that I had gone in (when they took my temperature it was only 99), but I did what I was told and thought I was on the mend.  We went home, and Eric took on Asher-Duty for the evening (giving him bottles) as I worked on getting some much needed rest.

July 26, 2012: When morning came, we had hoped that I would feel better, but I still felt awful.  We had an appointment for Asher that morning to discuss his sleeping issues (we were concerned that he wouldn't sleep on his back due to acid-reflux) and his puking of bright yellow fluid.  The doctor agreed that he did have acid reflux and sent us home with a prescription for him.  When we got back to the house, Eric (who took the day off to help me), remained on Asher-Duty while I got more sleep.  I was still feeling feverish, and continued to take my temperature.  At one point it was 103.5 and after the difference in temperature at the ER, I figured it must be a fluke, but when I retested with our mercury thermometer, it was the same.  I still wasn't convinced that it was accurate, so I waited a couple of hours and then took it again.  At that time my temp. was 104.7.  Then I decided I better call the doctor's office again.  When I spoke with the nurse, she was shocked at the temperature and also questioned if it was accurate, but at that point I had had Eric take his temp. and it came up normal, so we knew it was working.  After talking things through with the nurse, she thought that I also had Mastitis, which presents flu-like symptoms.  Thus, Eric was off to Walgreens (again) to pick up another prescription.  The drug that they gave me was nasty and hurt my stomach some, but it seemed to start working pretty quickly (thankfully).  When I woke up at 10:00 that evening, my fever had broke and I was feeling much better.  I was still tired, but my energy was back and I was feeling well enough to get back on Asher-Duty for the evening so that Eric could get some rest before going back to work.  For the next few days, I still struggled keeping my fluctuating temperature down, but I really felt much better other than that and some painful headaches (which I am still getting).

July 27, 2012: When Friday came, I was feeling much better than the previous 2 days and Asher had his Mommy back, so everyone was happy again...so happy that apparently Asher decided he didn't need to be constantly held anymore.  He stopped puking the yellow fluid and after Eric figured out that he likes to sleep next to the rail of his crib, he started allowing us to put him to bed, and continues to do so, making it MUCH easier on us (thank you Asher!).
